AI agents for home services and trades

The short version: in trades, the missed call is the lost job. A customer with a burst pipe calls three numbers and books the first one that answers. An agent that picks up at 11pm on a Sunday pays for itself faster than anything else you can buy.

Why this vertical converts fastest

Every qualifying signal is present at once: inbound volume outside business hours, a booking step between enquiry and revenue, revenue lost to response time rather than price, and seasonal demand that makes hiring a bad answer.

It’s also the most contested boutique vertical, with funded product vendors at serious scale. We compete on customisation and integration depth, not on the core call-answering workflow — and we’ll tell you honestly during the audit if an off-the-shelf product serves you better.

What this costs you today

27%
Inbound calls unanswered · Invoca, 2025

The missed call rate

Invoca’s research on call analytics across home services businesses found that 27% of inbound calls go unanswered, with each missed call costing an average of $1,200 in lost revenue (Invoca, 2025).

62%
Missed during peak periods · ServiceTitan, 2024

Peak-hour physics

ServiceTitan’s analysis of 50,000+ contractor phone lines found a 62% missed call rate during peak periods when crews are on job sites (ServiceTitan, 2024; CallJolt, 2026).

$45k–$252k
Annual lost revenue, mid-size HVAC · CallJolt, 2026

What it adds up to

For a mid-size HVAC company that translates to $45,000–$252,000 in annual lost revenue. A plumbing company loses $18,000–$234,000. A roofing company can lose $100,000+ from a single storm event (CallJolt, 2026).

86%
Hang up without leaving a message · CallJolt, 2026

Voicemail is not a backstop

The structural cause isn’t laziness — it’s physics. Contractors are in attics, crawl spaces, and on rooftops. Of callers who reach voicemail, 86% hang up without leaving a message (CallJolt, 2026). Every dollar spent on Google Ads, LSA and SEO to generate that call is wasted at the moment it goes to voicemail.

$0.05–$0.15
Per minute AI usage cost · Retell AI, 2026

What the fix costs

Voice agent usage costs typically range from $0.05 to $0.15 per minute on mainstream platforms (Retell AI, 2026; Orvera AI, 2026). A three-minute after-hours call that books a $400 service visit costs roughly $0.15–$0.45 in AI usage. The math doesn’t require a spreadsheet.

Workflows we automate

After-hours call answering and booking

What it is. A voice agent that answers every inbound call, qualifies the job, checks your live calendar, books the slot and confirms by SMS.
Who it’s for. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, locksmiths, cleaning.
What you get. Zero missed calls, and jobs booked while your competitors’ phones ring out. The agent works the weekend and the 11pm burst-pipe call without overtime, sick leave, or a second phone line.

Emergency triage and dispatch

What it is. An agent that separates genuine emergencies from next-day work, applies your call-out rules, and pages the on-call tech with address and fault summary.
Who it’s for. Businesses running an on-call roster — especially plumbing, HVAC and electrical where after-hours emergencies are the highest-ticket calls you’ll take.
What you get. Technicians woken only for real emergencies, arriving knowing what they’re walking into rather than just that “someone called”.

Quoting and follow-up

What it is. An agent that produces quotes from your rate card and job templates, sends them, then follows up on the schedule you set until the customer answers.
Who it’s for. Estimators, owner-operators — any business where quoting is a bottleneck between enquiry and booked work.
What you get. Quotes out same-day and followed up without anyone remembering to. The agent doesn’t forget, doesn’t procrastinate, and doesn’t let a quote sit in a queue for two weeks.

Job scheduling and reschedules

What it is. An agent that manages the churn — cancellations, reschedules, running-late notifications — and re-optimises the day’s route.
Who it’s for. Dispatchers, office managers.
What you get. The single most interrupt-driven job in the business, handled. A customer calling to reschedule gets a live answer, a new slot from real-time availability, and a confirmation SMS.

Review requests and reactivation

What it is. An agent that requests reviews at the right moment post-job, and reactivates customers due for service.
Who it’s for. Owners, marketing.
What you get. Review volume up, and revenue from customers you already have. The agent asks within 24 hours of job completion, when satisfaction is highest.

What we integrate with

Every platform below has a documented public API. We’ve verified each one:

LayerPlatforms
Field serviceServiceM8, simPRO, Jobber (GraphQL), ServiceTitan (V2 REST, webhooks), Housecall Pro, Tradify
AccountingXero, MYOB, QuickBooks — all with documented OAuth2 REST APIs
CRMHubSpot, Pipedrive — both with full REST APIs and webhook support
CommsTwilio-based voice, SMS, WhatsApp

The competitive landscape

This vertical is crowded. Here’s an honest map:

Platform-native AI. ServiceTitan’s AI Virtual Agent books jobs to the dispatch board, handles reschedules and transfers to live CSRs. Housecall Pro offers CSR AI and Voice add-ons. Jobber ships an AI Copilot and AI-assisted receptionist on higher tiers. Strong if you’re already on the platform — but locked to that platform’s workflows and pricing.
Trades-specific AI startups. Sameday (Y-Combinator backed, $449/mo Launch tier with 500 minutes). Avoca AI (ServiceTitan Gold Partner, sales-quoted ~$1,000–$3,000/mo, aimed at $3M+ revenue operators). Purpose-built, at enterprise pricing and usually with minimum terms.
Horizontal AI answering. Rosie ($49/mo, 250 minutes). Goodcall ($79/mo, unlimited minutes, caps on unique callers). Affordable entry points that lack deep field service integration — they take messages and send links rather than booking into your live dispatch board.

Regulatory landscape

AI voice agents operate under a real legal framework, not a grey area:

The FCC’s February 2024 Declaratory Ruling confirmed that AI-generated voices fall under the TCPA, with penalties of $500–$1,500 per call and no aggregate cap (FCC, 2024). This governs outbound AI calls.
For inbound AI receptionists, the FCC has stated that “the TCPA’s requirements do not extend to technologies used to answer inbound calls” (FCC 24-84, ¶11).
State-level disclosure laws are arriving fast. Texas SB 140 (effective September 2024) requires AI voice disclosure within the first 30 seconds of a call. Maine’s 10 M.R.S. §1500-DD (effective September 2025) requires disclosure when AI communicates with consumers in trade or commerce.
The EU AI Act imposes parallel disclosure requirements for any company calling EU residents.

We build disclosure into every agent’s greeting by default. It’s the posture that ages well as more states pass laws, and it’s honest with the caller.

Where we’d start

After-hours call answering. It’s the single highest-ROI workflow in trades, and here’s why:

It’s the only workflow where the alternative is literally zero — voicemail, not a slower human.
The revenue per captured call is highest: after-hours calls are disproportionately emergencies, and emergency calls carry the highest ticket values.
The integration is simplest: one phone number, one calendar, one SMS confirmation. No dispatcher training, no change to daytime operations.
It proves the technology on your least-risky calls before you trust it with quoting, dispatch, or customer reactivation.

Start here, measure the captured jobs against your phone records, and expand from a position of evidence — not faith.

Our engagement process

  1. 01

Audit — 5 days, fixed price. Including a missed-call analysis of your actual phone records.

  2. 02

    Scope and fix price.

  3. 03

Build — 2–4 weeks. Faster here than most verticals; the integrations are well-trodden.

  4. 04

Shadow mode. The agent handles overflow first, then primary.

  5. 05

    Go live, then AgentOps.

Frequently asked questions

Will customers hang up on a robot?

Modern voice agents respond in around a second and sound natural. In live deployments, satisfaction on routine calls is comparable to human handling. Customers care about being answered.

What happens if it can’t handle the call?

It transfers to your team or on-call tech with the full context of the conversation so far — who’s calling, what’s wrong, what’s been said.

Can it book directly into our existing calendar?

Yes. It reads and writes live to your field service platform. It won’t double-book because it isn’t working from a copy.

What does it cost to run?

Voice agents typically run between $0.05 and $0.15 per minute in usage costs on mainstream platforms, with premium tiers up to $0.40/min (Retell AI, 2026; Orvera AI, 2026). We publish this during the audit so you can model it precisely.

How fast can we go live?

2–4 weeks is typical for a single-workflow voice deployment on a supported field service platform.

Do we need to tell callers they’re talking to an AI?

For inbound calls the TCPA does not currently require disclosure, but several states — including Texas and Maine — now require it. We build disclosure into the greeting by default because it’s the posture that ages well as regulation expands.

Can it handle calls in languages other than English?

Yes. The underlying voice models support multilingual conversation, and the agent can detect the caller’s language and respond accordingly. This is configured during the build phase.

What if we’re already on ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro?

Maybe you don’t need us. If the native agent covers your workflows and you’re comfortable within that platform’s pricing, it may be the simpler choice. We add value when you need cross-platform integration, custom triage logic, or workflows the native agents don’t cover.

Does it work with our existing phone number?

Yes. We port or forward your existing number through a Twilio-based voice layer. Your customers see no change — same number, same business name on caller ID.
